MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Cleveland's offense worked well against the Minnesota Vikings, but the Browns' defense suffered a major blow with the loss of Pro Bowl linebacker Jamir Miller to a torn right Achilles' tendon.

Tim Couch and Kelly Holcomb combined to go 14-of-19 for 238 yards and two touchdowns to lead Cleveland to a 27-15 victory against the revamped Vikings on Saturday night.

There was no immediate word on how long Miller, the first Browns player to be selected to the Pro Bowl since the team returned to Cleveland in 1999, would be sidelined.

He landed awkwardly after being blocked into Brant Boyer on Moe Williams' 4-yard touchdown run on Minnesota's opening possession. Miller stayed on the ground for several minutes before being carted off the field.

Jamel White rushed four times for 20 yards, caught three balls for 81 yards and gave the Browns a 7-0 lead with a 45-yard reception from Couch in the first quarter. White, a second-year running back, is having a strong training camp while rookie William Green has nursed a shoulder injury.

Green ran for 11 yards on six carries. The Browns' No. 1 draft pick, who began the preseason with a five-day holdout, came in on Cleveland's second series, taking two handoffs for 4 yards.

His best run came in the second quarter when he ran 4 yards to the Vikings 18. One play later, he was dropped for a 1-yard loss by Jim Nelson.

Cleveland scored twice in the third quarter to put the game out of reach. Cornerback Kalvin Pearson, third on Cleveland's depth chart, picked off Vikings rookie Shaun Hill on an overthrown screen pass and ran 60 yards to make it 20-7.

Then, with 7:12 left in the quarter, Holcomb completed a 52-yard pass to Andre Davis on the drive's first play to the Minnesota 6. That set up Holcomb's 5-yard pass to Mark Campbell to put Cleveland up 27-7.

Holcomb played two quarters, going 7-for-10 for 100 yards. Couch went 7-for-9 for 138 yards.

Cleveland's offense chewed up Minnesota's overhauled defense. The Browns had 181 yards passing in the first half, and 283 for the game. Minnesota's defense, which has only two players from last season starting in the same position, missed several key tackles and allowed a number of long-yardage plays.

Daunte Culpepper went 8-of-13 for 66 yards, 55 coming on the Vikings' opening drive. Culpepper was nearly intercepted in the first quarter, but former Viking Robert Griffith, playing in his first game with the Browns, couldn't hang on to the ball. Randy Moss finished with two catches for 17 yards.

Williams, back with the Vikings after spending last season with Baltimore, made his case to be the backup to second-year running back Michael Bennett. The seventh-year player finished with 19 yards on four carries and scored Minnesota's only touchdown.

Bennett, who only saw action in the first quarter, had 3 yards on four carries. Minnesota finished with 73 yards rushing.

D'Wayne Bates, the leading candidate to replace Cris Carter opposite Moss, caught three passes on the opening drive for 29 yards, including a 7-yarder to set up Williams' touchdown. Bates finished with 40 yards on four catches.

Vikings kicker Doug Brien, who's replacing Gary Anderson, missed a pair of 52-yard field goals. Bennitte Waddell recovered Jeremy Allen's fumble in the end zone to make it 27-13, and Matt Cercone caught Spergon Wynn's pass on the two-point conversion.

Browns receiver Dennis Northcutt, who is fighting to make the Browns roster, made a nice 38-yard kick return in the second half, but had just one reception for 4 yards.

Quincy Morgan, this season's likely starter opposite Kevin Johnson, had 26 yards on two catches.
