TURNBERRY, Scotland (Ticker) -- Karrie Webb rallied for her third Women's British Open title Sunday, carding a 6-under-par 66 at Turnberry Golf Club to pull away from an unheralded group of players. Webb began the day three shots off the pace but played bogey-free on the Ailsa Course, sprinkling in three birdies apiece on the front and back nine. She won by two strokes, finishing at 15-under 273. A two-time Player of the Year from Australia, the 27-year-old Webb won the British Open for the third time, but first since it became an LPGA Tour major last year. She also claimed the event in 1995 and 1997. Webb, who had won just one of her 13 starts this season, earned her sixth career major title, tying for sixth on the all-time list with Juli Inkster, Betsy King, Pat Bradley, Patty Sheehan and Kathy Whitworth. Michelle Ellis and Paula Marti of Spain tied for second at 13-under 275. Rookies Jenny Rosales of the Philippines and Candie Kung of Taiwan, Jeong Jang of Korea and Sweden's Catrin Nilsmark shared fourth at 11-under 277. Rosales began the day tied for the lead with Swede Carin Koch but shot a 1-over 73. Koch followed three straight 68s with a 74 and tied for eighth at 278. Of the top six players following Webb, only Nilsmark has won an LPGA Tour event. (MORE) Copyright © 2002 SportsTicker Enterprises, L.P. |
