SPARTA, Kentucky (Ticker) -- Felipe Giaffone became the latest first-time winner on the Indy Racing League circuit Sunday by taking the checkered flag for the Belterra Casino Indy 300 at Kentucky Speedway.

The 2001 IRL Rookie of the Year, Giaffone held off IRL champion Sam Hornish Jr. by .0932 seconds for his first career victory in his 25th start. The Brazilian led 124 of 200 laps and became the sixth first-time winner this season.

Hornish took over the points lead with his runner-up finish and was followed across the line by two-time Belterra Casino winner Buddy Lazier.

Scott Sharp and Helio Castroneves rounded out the top five, while Al Unser Jr. was sixth.

Pole sitter Sarah Fisher finished eighth.
