WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (AP) Tony Stewart had little competition and his Pontiac was the class of the field over the waning laps Sunday at Watkins Glen International.

Stewart beat rookie Ryan Newman by 1.636 seconds for his 15th career victory and third this year, matching Matt Kenseth for the most on the Winston Cup circuit.

Stewart was racing for the first time since being placed on a season-long probation for the second year in a row and fined $60,000 for punching a photographer Aug. 4 at the Brickyard 400 in Indianapolis. He said he is seeking professional help for his explosive temper.

Robby Gordon was third, followed by P.J. Jones and polesitter Ricky Rudd.

Indy Racing League

SPARTA, Ky. (AP) Felipe Giaffone narrowly beat fast-closing Sam Hornish Jr. in the Belterra Casino Indy 300 for his first victory in the Indy Racing League.

The 27-year-old Brazilian, whose best previous finish was second at Texas last year and at Nazareth, Pa., in April, led the final 39 laps on the 1.5-mile Kentucky Speedway tri-oval after the leaders made their final pit stops for fuel.

Buddy Lazier was third, followed by Scott Sharp, Helio Castroneves and Al Unser Jr., who missed the past two races while undergoing treatment for alcohol abuse.

Sarah Fisher, the first woman to start from the pole in a major racing series, led the first 26 laps and finished eighth.

During practice for an Infiniti Pro Series race at the Kentucky Speedway earlier in the day, actor Jason Priestley's race car crashed head-on into a wall at nearly 180 mph, breaking his back and leaving him in serious condition with a concussion and other injuries.

CART

LEXINGTON, Ohio (AP) Pole-sitter Patrick Carpentier led virtually from start to finish in the Mid-Ohio Grand Prix.

Carpentier, who won his first pole in four years Saturday, averaged 106.680 mph to hold off Christian Fittipaldi by 3.2 seconds at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Michael Andretti was third.

Carpentier, who drives for Player's Forsythe, won for the third time in his career and the second time in three races.

The 30-year-old French Canadian, who turns 31 on Tuesday, led 90 of the 92 laps in his Ford Cosworth-Reynard. He lost the lead briefly after two pit stops.
