MANHATTAN BEACH, California (Ticker) -- Chanda Rubin completed a dream week with a 5-7, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 victory over defending champion Lindsay Davenport in the final of the $585,000 JP Morgan Chase Open on Sunday. The 12th-seeded Rubin knocked off No. 1 Serena Williams in the quarterfinals and fifth-seeded Jelena Dokic in the semifinals before rallying to beat the third-seeded Davenport. Afterwards, Rubin called her second title of the year and sixth of her career the sweetest of all. "Yes it is because of the people I've beaten," said Rubin, who earned the top prize of $93,000. "This being a win over No. 1, the No. 5 or 6 and the No. 3. I felt the tournament was just as easily mine as anyone else's with Serena out." Davenport was not in vintage form after a seven-month layoff, but was good enough to make the finals. However on Sunday, she committed 11 double faults and Rubin almost matched that with 10. Davenport underwent knee surgery in January and was sidelined until July, when she made her 2002 debut at the Fed Cup. Since then, the three-time Grand Slam titlist reached semifinals in consecutive weeks at Stanford and San Diego before advancing to the championship match here. On Sunday, she won the first set and served for the match with a 5-4 lead in the second set. But Rubin broke and won the first four points of the tiebreaker. "I struggled with closing matches early all week," Davenport said. "Again today it happened. I wasn't concerned about it until today because I didn't win." The third set was knotted at 3-3 when Rubin broke in the seventh game and held off two break points on her own serve to go ahead 5-3 with a 100 mile-per-hour ace on game point. Davenport fell behind 15-40 before getting to deuce. Rubin held her third match point before claiming the win when Davenport slugged a forehand over the baseline. "I think maybe she was a little bit tired," Rubin said of Davenport. "This is her first final since being out." But Davenport didn't use that as an excuse. "In the end, she (Rubin) was the one who came up with the right shots at the right moments," Davenport said. "It's tough to end this way. It would have been better to go into my week off with a title." Copyright © 2002 SportsTicker Enterprises, L.P. |
