Cuba Wins World University Baseball Championship

MESSINA, Sicily (AP) Oreluis Avila pitched a seven-hitter, and Dani Miranda homered as Cuba beat the United States 6-0 Sunday to win the World University Baseball Championship.

Cuba went 7-0 at the tournament, finishing with four straight shutouts.

Miranda homered in the second off Kyle Sleeth, and Cuba made it 3-0 in the second when Mario Vega hit an RBI single to center and Sam Fuld's throw to third was wild, going past third baseman Aaron Hill for a run-scoring error.

Rolexis Molina hit an RBI single in the fifth that scored Mario Denis, who reached on a leadoff error by Hill.

Sleeth allowed four runs - two earned - and six hits in five innings.

Japan beat Taiwan 5-0 to win the bronze medal.

South Korea finished in fifth place, followed by Italy, China, the Czech Republic, Canada and France.
