INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Rookie Tamika Catchings was serenaded with chants of M-V-P. Coach Nell Fornter encouraged fans to buy playoff tickets. Some players emerged from the locker room holding balloons. A playoff-atmosphere, yes, but the Indiana Fever are still one win away from their first playoff berth. Catchings scored 20 points as the Fever beat the Miami Sol 77-63 Sunday night before a franchise-record crowd of 15,488. The Fever (15-16) can clinch the first playoff berth in their three-year history by winning at Cleveland on Tuesday. "Our job is not done yet," Fortner said. "They know they have to beat Cleveland. The playoff berth would mean everything for the franchise." The Fever can still advance with a loss if both Orlando (15-16) and Miami (14-17) lose their final games. To make the playoffs, Orlando needs to win its final regular-season game Tuesday at home against New York - which has already clinched the East - and Indiana has to lose its final game. Miami (14-17) finishes its season Tuesday at home against Detroit and has the tiebreaker advantage over Orlando and Indiana. "We're not in the playoffs," Catchings said. "Where not where we want to be." The Fever trailed 27-23 with 5 minutes left in the first half before going on a decisive 13-0 run. The Sol went 0-for-5 from the field and had four turnovers during their scoreless stretch. Fever guard Bridget Pettis had two steals and five points during the run, turning the momentum in their favor and leading a defensive effort that limited Miami to 36 percent shooting. "I brought a lot of pressure defense and that's what turned the tempo of the game," Pettis said. The Fever maintained that tempo in the second half, shooting 57 percent, led by Nikki McCray's 5-for-6. She had 10 points in the half and 16 overall. "The last few games have been like playoff games for us," McCray said. "We've felt the pressure and we couldn't afford to lose. That's going to help us if we make it." Sheri Sam led the Sol with 20 points. Miami coach Ron Rothstein said the Sol didn't have the energy to regroup in the second half. "I'm surprised with their intensity for the whole game and disappointed in ours," he said. "We're still alive. We have to go home to win." The Fever were 19-45 over their first two seasons but have been revitalized by Catchings. She entered the game as the league's leading scorer and was first in steals and fourth in rebounds. She was effective Sunday on limited shooting, going 6-for-12 from the field and 7-for-9 from the free throw line, and had seven assists. She said she wouldn't worry about postseason honors, including rookie of the year. "It feels good, but my main focus is getting us to the playoffs," Catchings said. "I want to be MVP, but I'd rather be in the playoffs." Notes: Indiana would play host to Game 1 of a playoff series Thursday or Friday. ... The Fever are 5-10 on the road. ... Catchings is averaging 23.5 points and 8.0 rebounds against Cleveland. ... Indiana Pacers coach Isiah Thomas was at the game.
