INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Some of the ATP Tour's hardest servers are involved in Monday's first-round action at the $800,000 RCA Championships hardcourt tennis event. Australian Mark Philippoussis, still on the comeback trail after undergoing his third knee surgery last year, takes on No. 9 Rainer Schuettler of Germany in an evening encounter. Philippoussis, one of the tour's biggest hitters who has suffered from injuries throughout his career, reached his only final of the year at the season-opening event in Adelaide, Australia and advanced to the fourth round at Wimbledon. Earlier Monday, No. 14 Greg Rusedski of Britain, who broke Philippoussis' record for the hardest serve in 1998 with a 149-miles per hour bomb, battles Albert Montanes of Spain. Rusedski won his only title of the year at the Heineken Open in January. He stopped a two-match skid last week at the Tennis Masters Series event in Cincinnati with a first-round upset of world No. 2 Marat Safin, but lost in the next round to Tommy Robredo. Australian Wayne Arthurs, who baffles opponents with a hard lefthanded serve, faces Korea's Hyung-Taik Lee. Arthurs appeared in the quarterfinals in Cincinnati, ousting Pete Sampras in the second round and defeating Robredo before losing to Juan Carlos Ferrero in the quarterfinals. Also, No. 11 Andrei Pavel of Romania plays Jeff Morrison of the United States, 12th seed Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia meets Martin Verkerk of the Netherlands, and No. 16 Fabrice Santoro of France encounters Israel's Harel Levy. In addition, Sweden's Magnus Norman squares off against American Robby Ginepri, Ramon Delgado of Paraguay battles Austrian qualifier Stefan Koubek, Germany's Nicolas Kiefer faces Denkark's Kristian Pless, and qualifier Emin Agaev of Azerbaijan plays Switzerland's Michael Kratochvil. German qualifier David Prinosil goes against Bohdan Ulihrach of the Czech Republic, Spain's Alberto Martin plays Sweden's Magnus Larsson, Michael Llodra of France encounters Sargis Sargsian of Armentia, and Israeli qualifier Jonathan Erlich meets Romanian Adrian Voinea. First prize is $111,600. Copyright © 2002 SportsTicker Enterprises, L.P. |
