CARLISLE, Pa. (AP) Rep. J.C. Watts pulled a hamstring, tumbled to the ground and was carted off the field Monday while running sprints with the Washington Redskins.

"The stupidity kicked in," said Watts, who spent the day with the team as a guest of owner Dan Snyder.

"I hope Snyder's got a good attorney," he added, laughing.

Watts, a star quarterback at Oklahoma and later in the Canadian Football League, retired from football in 1986 and was elected to Congress as a Republican from the state in 1994. He's not running for re-election this year.

For that matter, he won't be running anywhere anytime soon after deciding to join the Redskins receivers and defensive backs for the end-of-practice "gassers" - windsprints back and forth across the width of the field. After his fall, the 44-year-old Congressman spent more than 15 minutes in the trainers' room getting iced down for what trainer Dean Kleinschmidt called "the worst injury of the day."

"This pulled hamstring reminds me why I got out in 1986," said Watts, walking with a stiff limp. "I run about 20 miles a week, but I don't do sprints, and my hamstring just didn't respond. I should've run down there with the linemen."

Before the practice, Watts attended some position meetings. He also threw a few informal passes as the players took the field.

"It's hard to spend any time at all in Washington and not keep up with the Redskins," Watts said. "They're THE game in town."
