Beylen and Holmes win women's masters

ASPEN, COLO. - Californians Andrea Beylen and Sue Holmes captured the Women's Masters title here Friday (August 29) during the second day of competition at the 25th Motherlode Volleyball Classic.

Seeded sixth in the 35 and older event, Beylen (Menlo Park) and Holmes (Mountain View) downed second-seeded Kathy Garfield (Santa Cruz, Calif.) and Cindy Stout (Los Gatos, Calif.) twice Friday, including a 15-8 decision in the title match.

Garfield and Stout advanced to the championship match by downing top-seeded Sandra Fahey and Marie Sayler (both from San Luis Obispo, Calif.) 15-9 in the finals of the contender's bracket.

Fahey and Sayler, who defeated Beylen and Holmes for the 1996 Motherlode Women's Masters title, dropped into the contender's final after losing 15-11 to this year's winners in the championship bracket finals.

Fifth-seeded Joyce Brewer (Highland Ranch, Colo.) and Yvette Matthews (Englewood, Colo.) finished fourth after being eliminated 15-0 Garfield and Stout. Fifth-place finishers in the Women's Masters were Marlene Hanson (San Diego, Calif.)/Susie Patterson (Aspen and Tina Hentschel (Greensboro, N. C.)/Lisa Yonemoto (Los Angeles, Calif.). Tying for seventh were Ronnie Sands/Diane Yoshida of San Diego and Kathy Imes/Cathy Smith of Evergreen, Colo.).

The 31-team Men's Masters division (37 and older) still had 15 teams vying late Friday for the title led by the undefeated top- seeded teams of Eric Anderson (Los Gatos)/Kent Kitchel (San Cruz) and Brad Barber (Santa Monica, Calif.)/David King (Santa Cruz). Anderson and Kitchel are the Men's Masters' defending champions.

Play continues Saturday as the Motherlode Volleyball Classic has attracted over 600 teams for the five-day event. Pro-am play in seven men's and five women's classes are being held at six different locations in the Aspen-area. The top players will compete in the "Open" classes for both men and women starting Saturday on sand courts at Koch Lumber Park and Willoughby Park.

Curtis Griffin (Boulder, Colo.) and Erik Moore (Salt Lake City, Utah) are back to defend the Men's Open title that they have won the past two years. The Women's Open will crown a new championship team as Gina Pillitiere (Akron, Ohio) will not return this year after teaming with Shannon Misek (Denver, Colo.) to win the 1996 title. Misek will team with Mardji Hyde (Castle Rock, Colo.).
