
Nine WPVA teams selected for FIVB world championships |
EL SEGUNDO, CALIF. - Led by Lisa Arce and Holly McPeak, nine teams from the Women's Professional Volleyball Association have been selected to represent the United States in next month's $300,000 World Championship of Beach Volleyball. The 32-team single-elimination women's event will be held September 10-13 at the UCLA Tennis Center in Los Angeles. Joining Arce and McPeak in the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship event will be the tandems of Barbra Fontana/Linda Hanley, Karrie Poppinga/Angela Rock, Karolyn Kirby/Nancy Reno, Krista Blomquist/Christine Schaefer, Linda Chisholm/Deb Richardson, Elaine Roque/Dennie Shupryt-Knoop, Gail Castro/Gayle Stammer and Liz Masakayan/Elaine Youngs. The top-ranked team on the Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour, Arce and McPeak have won nine events of the 16 events they have entered this season enroute to $199,100 in earnings together. Winners of 14 pro beach events together in 26 starts together, Arce and McPeak have won two FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour events together this season in Pescara, Italy (July 6) and Pusan, Korea (August 17). Arce and McPeak have also finished second in two international stops this season along with a third enroute to a 30-7 match record. On the Evian Tour this season, the Arce/McPeak partnership has netted seven tournament titles in 11 starts with $106,100 in earnings and a 59-8 match mark together. With the Korea win, Arce and McPeak have now won 14 pro beach volleyball titles together in 26 career starts. Arce and McPeak won two of three sets (12-4, 11-12 and 12-7) in the Korea championship match to defeat Monica Rodrigues and Adriana Samuel of Brazil, the silver medalists at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. Arce and McPeak have now posted a 140-23 (85.9 percent) career match mark together to share $359,550 in pro beach earnings. The Korea title was the 48th of McPeak's pro career, including nine FIVB crowns. Arce, who played with McPeak at both Mira Costa High School (Manhattan Beach) and Cal-Berkeley, captured her 14th pro title with three international championships. |
