
Top seeds advance at Motherlode |
ASPEN, COLO. - The top-seeded teams in the both the Men's and Women's Open continued their winning ways here Sunday (August 31) in the 25th Motherlode Volleyball Classic. Curtis Griffin (Boulder, Colo.) and Erik Moore (Salt Lake City, Utah), who have won the past two Motherlode's Men's Open title, won all their matches Sunday to advance to Monday's final rounds in the 64-team event. Valinda Hilleary (Littleton, Colo.) and Pat Keller (Sarasota, Fla.), who captured the Motherlode's 1993 Women's Open title, paced the 32-team women's event with a pair of wins Sunday. Play concludes Monday as the Motherlode Volleyball Classic has attracted a record 607 pro-am teams for the five-day event. Sunday's Men's Open featured several upsets as five of the top eight seeded teams dropped third-round matches in the championship bracket. Top-seeded Men's Open tandems being upset Sunday were second-seeded Scott Murdock/David Smith, fifth-seeded Harold Johnson/Cole Roberts, sixth-seeded Rico Becker/Tom Witt, seventh-seeded Jim Hooper/Craig Moothart and eighth-seeded Al Janc/Ken Patrick. The Women's Open had only two major upset after two rounds of championship bracket play as 10th-seeded Kristal Attwood (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Lynn Sumida (Kaneohe, Hi.) defeated seventh- seeded Erin Deiters and Deanna Johnson (both from San Diego, Calif.). The most surprising team in the Women's Open after two days of play was turned in by the 27th-seeded tandem of Reta Dominguez/Ingrid Rooslid (both from Albuquerque, N. M.). Dominguez and Rooslid upset sixth-seeded Mardji Hyde (Castle Rock, Colo.) and Shannon Misek (Denver, Colo.) Saturday and 22nd-seeded Angela Frederick (Seattle, Wash.) and Tess Swift (Portland, Ore.) Sunday. |
