25th Motherlode Volleyball Classic

 

ASPEN, COLO. - The No. 1-seeded teams of Curtis Griffin/Eric Moore and Valinda Hilleary/Pat Keller captured the top two sand volleyball titles here Sunday (September 1) as the 25th Motherlode Volleyball Classic concluded after attracting a record 607 teams for the five-day event.

Griffin (Boulder, Colo.) and Moore (Salt Lake City, Utah) won their third-straight Motherlode Men's Open title by downing 11th-seeded Rob Baily (Annandale, Va.) and Jason Robertson (Fairfax, Va.) 15-8 and 7-5 in a double-final.

Griffin and Moore advanced to the finals with a 11-8 win over fourth-seeded Dane Hansen (Lakewood, Colo.) and Ryan Post (Denver, Colo.). The Hansen/Post tandem had defeated Griffin and Moore earlier in the 64-team Men's Open.

Hilleary (Littleton, Colo.) and Keller (Sarasota, Fla.), who captured the Motherlode's 1993 Women's Open title, downed third- seeded Carrie Busch (Milwaukee, Wisc.) and Nancy Mason (Belleville, Ill.) 15-4 in the final of the 32-team event.

The victory in the Women's Open championship match was the second for the Hilleary and Keller over the Busch/Mason team. Hilleary and Keller advanced to the title contest with a 15-10 win over Busch and Mason in the winner's bracket finals earlier Sunday. Busch and Mason earned their spot in their first Motherlode final by eliminating Liz Pagano and Lynda Street (Jupiter, Fla.) 11-6.

Nine of the 12 Motherlode Volleyball Classic titles were determined Monday. Here are the top three finishers in each division.
