WORLDWIDE EVENTS
The WPVA has sanctioned more than 140 events since its inaugural tournament on May 16, 1987 at Newport Beach, California. The WPVA Tour, which began in 1991, has visited 62 sites in 23 states and three countries, including Puerto Rico and Japan.
AUDIENCE
Beach volleyball has grown in both scope and prominence to the point where it now exercises significant influence among the millions of Americans who watch, read about and play the sport. The more than 140 Tour events have attracted an audience in excess of 950,000 spectators, while millions more have watched on television.
ELITE COMPETITION
Beach volleyball is played between two-person teams on a 9x18 meter outdoor sand court. Games are played to 15 points. Participants earn points for tournament finishes throughout the season that, when combined with their partner's points, determine the week's rankings or seedings. Players have the option to change partners for each tournament. At each event, as many as 32 teams compete on up to five courts over two days. Tournaments include both double and single elimination competition with invitational events showcasing the talent of top players on the Tour. Semifinal and championship matches are held on center court on the last day and are televised nationally.
GRAND SLAM EVENTS
Each year the WPVA includes in its regular tour packages four Grand Slam Events, so named because of their special nature and strong audience appeal. The 1997 Grand Slam Events include: The US Open, The Evian Invitational, The Evian National Championships and The Best of the Beach.
