10 Volleyball Tips
Hitting:
- Get your feet to the ball, it's hard to broadjump in the sand
- Turn your hits, indoor players hit straight ahead
- Keep your elbow up and reach high, the sand gets deep when you drop your elbow
Setting:
- Get your feet to the ball and face where you set
- Follow through to the area you want the set to go
- Bring down the height of that set, quickness is a bonus
Beach Digging:
- It's O.K. to dig with open hands, try to get under the ball and almost pluck it out of the air. You can double contact the ball but you can't lift it.
Serving:
- A tough floater is more difficult then a mediocre jump serve
- To make a serve float contact the ball with a stiff wrist and upon contact pull the wrist back off the ball
Jump Serve:
- Develop a consistent toss
- Jump from outside the court and land inbounds
- Develop consistency before power
Footwork:
- The sand is deep, footwork is the key
- Learn patterns for defense, and offense, learn how to get anywhere on the court from any point
Shots:
- Develop your shots. Everyone can hit.
- For a cut shot keep your elbow high and contact the ball overhead, approach the ball like you are hitting
- To dunk the ball, approach like you are hitting, leaving your elbow high, tip the ball with the heal of the hand over the net./LI>
Blocking:
- Watch the hitter not the ball
- Take a step and get your nose on the hitter's hitting shoulder
- Jump up and place your hands on the hitter's side of the net
- Have solid strong hands when the hitter attacks the ball
Passing:
- Keep your eyes on the ball
- Get your belly button behind the ball
- Tilt your shoulders to the target
- Pass the ball with an arc, remember your partner must run up and set it
Communication:
- Your partner can't read your mind. Tell her how you want to be set. Discuss defensive strategies, call the open part of the court for your partner, call a shot or area to hit.
