CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Muggsy Bogues was hired Wednesday as coach of the struggling Charlotte Sting, replacing Trudi Lacey, who will remain as the team's general manager.
Bogues ran practice Wednesday afternoon and was expected to be introduced at a news conference later in the day. Charlotte has the WNBA's worst record at 3-21, with four fewer wins than San Antonio, the last-place team in the Western Conference.
Standing just 5-foot-3, Bogues endeared himself to basketball fans in North Carolina -- first at Wake Forest then with the NBA's Charlotte Hornets -- with his determined play at point guard.
Bogues' hire is the latest in a series of moves by the Sting, who traded three-time Olympic gold medalist Dawn Staley on Monday and announced Tuesday that guard Allison Feaster -- the team's leading scorer in 2003 and 2004 -- would miss the rest of the season because of pain caused by her pregnancy.
Bogues left Wake Forest in 1987 as the Atlantic Coast Conference's career leader in assists and steals, and became one of 10 players to have his jersey retired by the school.
