The Netherlands will be without midfielder Rafael van der Vaart for the World Cup in Brazil, the team announced Wednesday. The 31-year-old would have been Holland's most experienced player.
According to a team statement and reports, van der Vaart, who has 25 goals in 109 international games, injured his calf while training in Portugal.
Already down midfielder Kevin Strootman, Holland manager Louis van Gaal has his work cut out for him if he expects the Dutch to repeat its recent World Cup success. The Netherlands were runners-up in 2010 to Spain, and the two teams will meet in the group stage of this year's Cup.
Despite the injuries, van Gaal's squad is still expected to move into the knockout stage.
Joining them in Group B is Australia and Chile.
