As the world counts down to the start of the World Cup, the host nation's own citizens, apparently, are stuck wishing it would have never been planned.

According to a poll from the Pew Research Center, 61 percent of Brazilians see hosting the Cup as a bad idea given the drain on public funding. In short, the majority of Brazilians believes the money could be better spent elsewhere, such as in schools and for health care.

They may be right: hosting the tournament is expected to cost the country up to $15 billion, the highest price in history. By contrast, the 2010 World Cup in South Africa reportedly cost about $3 billion.

Brazilians' discontent with the government has been no secret in the months leading up to the Cup, as protests have been rampant throughout the region.

The tournament will begin June 12, and, perhaps more importantly for those living in Brazil, end July 13.
