Saturday's decisive Group D match between Italy and England just got significantly tougher for the Azzurri side as keeper Gianluigi Buffon will reportedly miss the contest with a twisted ankle, according to The Guardian.
The 36-year-old captain for Italy's national team twisted his ankle on Friday in practice, and it was initially described as a “very light” injury. However, after a day of physical therapy, it appears the injury is more serious, and Buffon won' be able to handle his typical keeping responsibilities.
Salvatore Sirigu of Paris Saint-Germain will likely replace the most experienced player on Italy's roster. Sirigu has eight international appearances compared to Buffon's 140.
Fullback Mattia de Sciglio is also sidelined with an injury, leaving the Azzurri potentially even more vulnerable against England's dangerous strikers.
