Group-by-Group scenarios entering the final group match

Since the United States allowed a goal at the death to Portugal on Sunday evening, going from a sure three points to a lonely one point, the various scenarios and tiebreakers of the World Cup have been discussed ad nauseam. Of course, though, the U.S. isn't the only country nervously looking at different “what ifs” for the upcoming week.

Only two groups (Group H also has two games) are still at work, with four spots in the knockout round up for grabs Thursday.

Remember, goal differential is the first tiebreaker, followed by goals scored, followed by head-to-head, followed by the "drawing of lots."

GROUP G

Germany (4 points, +4 GD) – vs. United States

  • Will win the group with a win or draw against United States.
  • Will advance with a loss to United States and a Ghana-Portugal draw, or if the Ghana-Portugal winner does not pass Germany in goal differential.

United States (4 points, +1 GD) – vs. Germany

  • Will win the group with a win over Germany.
  • Will advance with a draw against Germany.
  • Will advance with a loss to Germany and a Ghana-Portugal draw.
  • Will advance with a loss to Germany and a Portugal win in which they don't pass the United States in goal differential.
  • Will advance with a loss to Germany and a one-goal Ghana win in which they don't score two more goals than the United States.

Ghana (1 point, -1 GD) – vs. Portugal

  • Will advance with a win over Portugal in which they pass the loser of Germany-United States in goal differential.
  • Will be eliminated with a loss or draw against Portugal.
  • Will be eliminated by a Germany-United States draw.

Portugal (1 point, -4 GD) – vs. Ghana

  • Will advance with a win over Ghana in which they pass the loser of Germany-United States in goal differential.
  • Will be eliminated with a loss or draw against Ghana.
  • Will be eliminated by a Germany-United States draw.

GROUP H

Belgium (6 points, +2 GD) – vs. South Korea

  • Belgium has clinched a spot in the knockout stage.
  • Will win the group with a win or draw against South Korea.
  • Will win the group with a loss and a Russia win.
  • A loss and an Algeria win drops Belgium to second.

Algeria (3 points, +1 GD) – vs. Russia

  • Will win the group with a win over Russia and a South Korea win.
  • Will advance with a win over Russia.
  • Will advance with a draw against Russia and a Belgium win or draw, or a loss in which South Korea doesn't pass Algeria in goal differential.

Russia (1 point, -1 GD) – vs. Algeria

  • Will advance with a win over Algeria and a Belgium win or draw.
  • Will advance with a win over Algeria and a Belgium loss, if South Korea doesn't pass Russia in goal differential.

South Korea (1 points, -2 GD) – vs. Belgium

  • Will advance with a win over Belgium and a Russia win.
  • Will advance with a win over Belgium and an Algeria draw, if South Korea passes Algeria in goal differential.

GROUP A

Brazil (7 points, +5 GD)

  • Won group with win over Cameroon on Monday.

Mexico (7 points, +3 GD)

  • Finished second in group after beating Croatia on Monday, but behind Brazil in goal differential.

Croatia (3 points, 0 GD)

  • Eliminated.

Cameroon (0 points, -9 GD)

  • Eliminated.

GROUP B

Netherlands (9 points, +7 GD)

  • Won group with victory over Chile on Monday.

Chile (6 points, +2 GD)

  • Finished second, despite losing to the Netherlands.

Spain (3 points, -3 GD)

  • Eliminated.

Australia (0 points, -6 GD)

  • Eliminated.

GROUP C

Colombia (9 points, +7 GD)

  • Colombia won group after beating Japan on Tuesday.

Greece (4 points, -2 GD)

  • Advanced with 2-1 win over Ivory Coast on Tuesday.

Ivory Coast (3 points, -1 GD)

  • Eliminated.

Japan (1 point, -4 GD)

  • Eliminated.

GROUP D

Costa Rica (7 points, +3 GD)

  • Costa Rica won group after draw vs. England on Tuesday.

Uruguay (6 points, 0 GD)

  • Advanced to knockout round with Tuesday's win over Italy.

Italy (3 points, -1 GD)

  • Eliminated.

England (0 points, -2 GD) – vs. Costa Rica

  • Eliminated.

GROUP E

France (7 points, +6 GD)

  • France won the group with Wednesday's 0-0 tie vs. Ecuador.

Switzerland (6 points, 1 GD)

  • Advanced to the knockout round with Wednesday's 3-0 win over Honduras.

Ecuador (4 points, 0 GD)

  • Eliminated.

Honduras (0 points, -7 GD)

  • Eliminated.

GROUP F

Argentina (9 points, +3 GD)

  • Argentina won the group with Wednesday's victory over Nigeria.

Nigeria (4 points, 0 GD)

  • Advanced to the knockout round, despite losing to Argentina, when Bosnia-Herzegovina beat Iran.

Bosnia-Herzegovina (3 points, 0 GD)

  • Eliminated.

Iran (1 point, -3 GD)

  • Eliminated.
