United States striker Chris Wondolowski had a chance to etch his name into American soccer lore Tuesday. Just before the full time whistle, Jermaine Jones' header found Wondolowski's foot right in front of goal.
His shot, as you can see, was unsuccessful. The telecast stated that Wondolowski had been whistled for offsides, but replays clearly showed he was not. Had his shot found the net, the US would be playing Argentina Saturday in the quarterfinals.
Wondolowski tweeted his thoughts on the matter later Tuesday.
I'm gutted to have let down everyone but especially my teammates. It's been an incredible ride but I know this will make me stronger.— Chris Wondolowski (@ChrisWondo) July 2, 2014
Thank you to all the great fans that has supported this wonderful team. This is a special group made up of great teammates— Chris Wondolowski (@ChrisWondo) July 2, 2014
Obviously it's unfair to put the onus on any one player, but man, that was close.
