Shield your eyes and hope for the best if you're a Dutch supporter.

Captain Robin van Persie, tied for the team lead with three goals this World Cup, may miss Wednesday's semifinal against Argentina with an upset stomach, according to his coach Louis van Gaal.

"He has a stomach problem, an intestinal problem. I don't know [if he will play]" van Gaal said at a press conference on Tuesday. "I will decide [on Wednesday]. Van Persie is our captain so he is very important to us. In principle, my captain always plays, but he has to be fit."

Van Persie drilled the Netherlands' first penalty kick goal in the quarterfinals against Costa Rica, and he's been instrumental in playing off Arjen Robben in the attacking third. Be it in the air, creating for himself, or cleaning up rebounds, adequately replacing Van Persie at this juncture would be near-impossible.

He trained on Tuesday, although he was separated from the team. Van gaal also expressed a slight chance that midfielder Nigel De Jong might be able to return from the groin injury he suffered against Mexico.
