Bush: Skipping Beijing opening would be 'affront' to Chinese

TOYAKO, Japan -- President Bush says he is going to the opening ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics because skipping it would be an "affront" to the Chinese people.

The president said at a news conference Sunday with Japan's leader that China must improve its record on human rights and religious freedom. But Bush also says he doesn't need to use the Olympics to express his concerns on those issues.

Prime Minister Yasou Fukuda announced for the first time that he plans to attend the opening ceremonies on Aug. 8. Some world leaders are boycotting that event to protest the communist nation's human rights record.
