Officials launch campaign to unseat volleyball federation chief

LAUSANNE, Switzerland -- A group of volleyball officials has launched a campaign to unseat Ruben Acosta as head of the world volleyball federation.

The group -- including the former second-ranking official at the federation, Jean-Pierre Seppey, and a deposed Argentine member of the FIVB executive board, Mario Goijman -- said that Acosta was making his own rules within the FIVB federation, which is against the Olympic Charter.

In a statement, the six officials called on political and sports authorities, both national and international, to enforce the rules of law, fair play and the Olympic Charter.

They added that they "did not exclude" founding a new international volleyball federation, which would be "democratic, transparent and respectful of the Olympic Charter and the rights of each member of the volleyball family."

Goijman and Seppey, who was fired from his position at the FIVB last year, have been involved in a long-running dispute with Acosta, who was cleared of corruption charges by a Lausanne court earlier this year.

Separately, Seppey has said he will challenge Acosta for the organization's top job in elections in Tokyo in October, demanding the elections be held under outside supervision. Seppey threatened to take Acosta to court if he or his wife, Malu, take part in organizing the elections or pay for any delegate's trip to the congress.

Acosta has been president of the Lausanne-based FIVB since 1984. The 72-year-old Mexican has already announced he is running for another term.
