Canelo vs. GGG odds: Gennady Golovkin an early favorite in the superfight
Despite having his KO streak broken last time out, oddsmakers still favor Golovkin
Now that the superfight between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin is official, it's time to look at who would be the favorite. Both fighters head into the September showdown on a roll with Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) fresh off a unanimous decision victory over Daniel Jacobs in March and Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs) off a unanimous shutout of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on Saturday.
Westgate superboook has installed Golovkin as the early favorite in the showdown at -160 for the September fight while Alvarez would be +140.
It would be just the second time in Alvarez's career as the betting underdog, with the last coming against Floyd Mayweather in 2013.
I'm a bit surprised by the line just because of how each fighter looked most recently. Alvarez looked as good as ever in his last two fights, dominating both Chavez and Liam Smith. While neither is in the same class as Golovkin, GGG had his 23-fight knockout streak end against Jacobs. Maybe it was just a matter of time, but an upgrade in opponent feels like something we haven't seen Golovkin have to deal with in a while.
