Battle on the Midway postponed until Sunday due to weather

Could this soon become the Battle on the Valley View Casino Center?. (Battle on the Midway)

UPDATE: The Syracuse Post-Standard is reporting that the Battle on the Midway has been postponed until Sunday at 4 p.m. ET due to the weather. The Sunday forecast calls for no rain and minimal wind.

Jeff Goodman of has since confirmed the news with Mike May, San Diego State's associate athletic director. The game will still be played on the Midway.

The original version of this post is below.

Playing games outdoors is pretty awesome, especially when it’s on a flight deck in San Diego. Naturally, the only drawback to playing a game outdoors is the weather -- rain or wind could make for a disastrous 40 minutes of hoops.

That seems to be the exact problem facing the organizers of the Battle on the Midway between Syracuse and San Diego State on Friday. According to the National Weather Service, there is a good chance there could be some rain on Friday evening. The game starts at 5 p.m. local time -- when San Diego is supposed to feel the effects of a “cold low pressure system.” Precipitation, 15-20 mph winds and lows in the 50s are likely. Yep, that sure sounds like ideal weather for November basketball.

The U-T San Diego is reporting that the backup plan is to move the game from the USS Midway Museum to the Valley View Casino Center.

“We’re monitoring the situation and feel we’ll have a better idea by [Tuesday] what the weather likely will be Friday night,” San Diego State associate athletic director Mike May told the paper. “At that point, we’ll really start to look at what the best options are for the ‘Battle on the Midway.’”

If the game is indeed moved indoors, the decision would have to be made very soon. The hardwood court would have to be moved to the new arena and reassembled, and 8,000 more seats would have to be sold.

A year ago, it began raining only hours after the North Carolina–Michigan State game ended on the USS Carl Vinson in San Diego.
