The Big 12 coaches went with the Smart choice.

Marcus Smart, a sophomore point guard for Oklahoma State, a player who very well could have been a top-five draft pick last June, was chosen as the league's preseason player of the year. The vote was conducted the by Big 12's 10 coaches and the news was released by the conference Thursday.

Smart was the unanimous pick; only Cowboys coach Travis Ford didn't vote for him due to rules stipulating head coaches can't cast a nod for their players.

Smart was the Player of the Year at the end of last season in the league. This marks the second time in Big 12 history a player has returned to the Big 12 the year after winning the award. You ready for the first? Kansas' Raef LaFrentz -- in 1997-98. Smart is the second OSU player in Big 12 history to earn this award in the preseason. He averaged 15.4 points last season, and his 99 steals were a conference freshman record.

Kansas took home the other two individual preseason awards:'s preseason national player of the year, Andrew Wiggins, was voted preseason Freshman of the Year in the league; Memphis transfer/forward Tarik Black was voted Newcomer of the Year,
