Butler's Roosevelt Jones wins Player of the Week after rare triple-double

From an individual standpoint, it was an interesting week in college basketball. There were a few really nice performances, but no truly great ones. With that in mind, why not pick a historic achievement and attach it to Player of the Week? I'm doing just that.

On Saturday, Butler's Roosevelt Jones accomplished something that hadn't been done in 32 years. His triple-double against St. John's was the first for the Buldogs since 1984. Jones averaged 14.5 points, 10.0 rebounds, 7.5 assists, 1.5 steals and shot 50 percent from the field in Butler's wins over Georgetown and St. John's last week. His 14 rebounds in the St. John's game was a career-high.

It was a crucial two-game stretch for the Bulldogs, who are still on track to reach the NCAA Tournament, but have to dodge any more bad losses, lest they make things really tricky.

Also, the program has been under such a dark cloud from a personal standpoint. Andrew Smith died in January, and a week ago, Butler assistant coach Emerson Kampen lost his six-month-old son to a genetic disease. The wins, and Rosy Jones' performances, did some lifting for the team's spirits.

"Rose's impact is on both ends of the court," Butler coach Chris Holtmann said after his triple-double. "That's a really rare accomplishment. We'll go as far as our seniors take us. It's their job to lead in practice and in games this time of year. They did that today."

Butler is now 16-7 but still below .500 in the Big East at 5-6.

I'll also note that Kelan Martin was right there with Jones for POTW, as he had 35 points against the Hoyas and 18 against the Red Storm. Butler's next game is a tricky one on the road against Seton Hall, and then two-loss Xavier heads to Hinkle Fieldhouse on Saturday.
