Catholic 7 announce dissolution from Big East
Tuesday morning the presidents of the Big East sent through approval that will allow for the Catholic 7 to become the Big East next season.
And yet ... it will stay the Big East.
This will be confusing for only a brief period, I hope, but on Tuesday morning the presidents of the Big East sent through approval that will allow for the Catholic 7 to become the Big East next season.
The Big East officially filed for its divorce last week.
But this means that DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, Seton Hall, St. John’s and Villanova will indeed play under the Big East banner next season, and the additions to their league are forthcoming. At least two programs will join, and we could have a 10-team conference if this new band can woo and work some magic to pull another program away from its current leagues.
"The seven basketball schools, which include many of the original founding schools of the Big East, have unanimously established the goal of continuing the storied legacy and time-honored traditions of athletic competition so closely associated with the Big East, including being the home of the very best college basketball in the nation," a statement on behalf of the Catholic 7 said. "Details about the expected broadcast media deal, season-ending tournament and additional members of the new conference will be announced in the near future."
The league still needs to determine a lot of logistics, like if its headquarters will remain in Providence, who the league commissioner will be (Mike Aresco, current Big East poobah, will presumably stay on with the other half of the Big East, in a yet-to-be-named conference). We do know that the C7 will keep the Big East tournament rights and will keep paying the rent to play at Madison Square Garden for the foreseeable future.
Again, still a little confusing, but clarity is coming and it's coming quickly.
