Player of the Week: Iowa State's Melvin Ejim

Iowa State senior Melvin Ejim averaged 35.5 points and 15.5 rebounds in two wins last week -- one of which was a triple-overtime victory at Oklahoma State. So this is simple, right?

Ejim is the National Player of the Week.

Nobody else was seriously considered.

"All the great players that have gone through this league, and Melvin Ejim's name is at the top," Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg said after being told that Ejim's 48 points against TCU on Saturday doubled as a Big-12 record. "That's unbelievable for a guy that maybe doesn't get as much credit as he deserves."

To that point, it's unfortunate that Saturday's incident between Oklahoma State star Marcus Smart and Texas Tech fan Jeff Orr overshadowed Ejim's 48-point, 18-rebound effort against TCU because, otherwise, Ejim might've been the biggest college basketball story from the weekend instead of the second-biggest story in his own conference. Either way, know this: Ejim is now averaging a league-best 19.8 points and 8.6 rebounds for a team that's 18-4 and ranked No. 8 in the Top 25 (and one) heading into Monday night's game at West Virginia. He's shooting 53.2 percent from the field and 37.7 percent from 3-point range, and the honor of Big 12 Player of the Year seems well within his grasp.
