College basketball rankings: Arizona barely hanging in Top 25 (and one) amid FBI probe
The Wildcats could look like a completely different team come Selection Sunday
Arizona lost 98-93 late Saturday in overtime at Oregon to fall to 22-7 overall and 12-4 in the Pac-12. And yet the result of that game seems so beside the point given everything else that's going on with the program.
There's a lot going on with the program.
Sean Miller is no longer coaching the team because of a Friday night report from ESPN that claimed he was caught on a wiretap discussing a $100,000 payment to ensure five-star prospect Deandre Ayton enrolled at Arizona -- and now Miller's coaching future is very much up in the air even though he released a statement Saturday saying he would be "vindicated." Meantime, Ayton continues to play. But Allonzo Trier is not playing because of a second failed drug test that Arizona claims isn't really a second failed drug test at all.
So there's a lot to unpack here.
And who knows what this team will look like on Selection Sunday? Will Miller be back or officially fired? Will Trier be in uniform or in street clothes? Will Ayton be removed from the court if more information is gathered or flourish under the strangest of bright lights? It's all guess-work, at this point. But, for now, I'm keeping the Wildcats in the CBS Sports Top 25 (and one). They are 23rd in Sunday morning's updated rankings.
Villanova remains No. 3 even after Saturday's 89-83 OT loss at Creighton. Why, you ask? Simply put, it's because I do not believe anybody below Jay Wright's Wildcats should be above Jay Wright's Wildcats. Same goes for Auburn. I kept the Tigers 10th despite Saturday's 72-66 loss at Florida because, quite simply, I do not believe anybody below Bruce Pearl's Tigers should be above Bruce Pearl's Tigers. And that Florida team that beat Auburn is now 26th because the Gators have way better wins than anybody else under consideration for the final spot. They've beaten Gonzaga, Auburn, Cincinnati and Kentucky -- and accumulated a total of nine top-50 KenPom wins. Yes, they also have five sub-50 losses -- which suggests they're one of the sport's most inconsistent teams. But the wins are so good that they offset much of the negative stuff on Florida's resume, and I suspect you'll see the selection committee highlight that when the bracket is unveiled two weeks from today.
