It's finally here.
After an offseason that lasted nearly seven months — and featured a surprising retirement from a 55-year-old Tony Bennett at Virginia — the opening day of the 2024-25 season has arrived. The first game of the season will tip a little after 11 a.m. ET. The last will tip around 11:30 p.m. ET. Before it's over, we'll get the debut of Cooper Flagg at Duke and two games between big brands expected to make the 2025 NCAA Tournament — first Texas vs. Ohio State in Las Vegas, then Baylor vs. Gonzaga in downtown Spokane, Washington.
Isn't that just fun to read?
I'll never complain about how never-ending college basketball's offseason is because, you know, I enjoy golf as much as the next guy. But six-plus months is a long time to wait for a new season, and I'm just thrilled that our wait is now done and that we'll have fresh results to discuss soon.
If you followed the Top 25 And 1 throughout the offseason, you likely know that Kansas will start things at No. 1. The Jayhawks open Monday with a game against Howard. Barring a massive surprise, they'll be 1-0 when they meet North Carolina, which is No. 4 in the Top 25 And 1, inside Allen Fieldhouse on Friday.
There are two changes to this edition of the Top 25 And 1, which is actually Version 30.0 since the end of last season. I've removed Providence and Xavier because of injuries. At Providence, Bryce Hopkins remains sidelined because of a torn ACL suffered in January. He'll be back this season — but exactly when remains unclear. So, for now, Providence is out of the Top 25 And 1. At Xavier, Lassina Traore, a transfer from Long Beach State who averaged 11.9 points and 10.3 rebounds last season, recently suffered a season-ending knee injury. So, for now, Xavier is also out of the Top 25 And 1. The Friars and Musketeers have been replaced, respectively, by Ole Miss and St. John's.

7 |
Baylor
| This ranking is based on Scott Drew's Bears returning three of the top seven scorers - Langston Love, Jayden Nunn and Josh Ojianwuna - from a team that secured a No. 3 seed in the 2024 NCAA Tournament. 8 |
Gonzaga
| This ranking is based on Mark Few's Zags returning every rotation piece besides Anton Watson from a team that advanced to the Sweet 16 of the 2024 NCAA Tournament. 13 |
Arkansas
| This ranking is based on John Calipari's Razorbacks returning one player (Trevon Brazile) from a team that finished 16-17 under Eric Musselman. 19 |
UCLA
| This ranking is based on Mick Cronin's Bruins returning four of the top five scorers - everybody except Adem Bona - from a team that finished fifth in the Pac-12. 21 |
Creighton
| This ranking is based on Greg McDermott's Bluejays returning three of the top six scorers - Ryan Kalkbrenner, Steven Ashworth and Mason Miller -- from a team that advanced to the Sweet 16 of the 2024 NCAA Tournament. 23 |
Rutgers
| This ranking is based on Steve Pikiell's Scarlet Knights only returning one double-digit scorer (Jeremiah Williams) from a team that finished below .500.
