A wild weekend in college basketball that featured all six of the teams ranked in the top six of the Associated Press Top 25 poll losing should result in no change at the top of this week's AP poll.
Gonzaga should remain No. 1.
Yes, the Zags lost late Saturday at Saint Mary's 67-57. But they're still 8-3 in Quadrant 1 games with zero losses outside of the first quadrant and wins over four schools in Monday morning's updated CBS Sports Top 25 And 1 daily college basketball rankings — namely No. 11 Texas Tech, No. 16 Texas, No. 17 Saint Mary's and No. 20 UCLA. Their adjusted efficiency margin is still more than five points better than anybody else's, according to KenPom.com. If the 2022 NCAA Tournament started today, they'd still be the No. 1 overall seed, according to CBS Sports Bracket Expert Jerry Palm. After playing in two of the past four championship games of the NCAA Tournament, they're still the favorite to win the 2022 NCAA Tournament, according to the betting markets.
This is still the No. 1 team.
Gonzaga will not play again until next Monday's West Coast Conference Tournament semifinals. If things go as planned, Gonzaga and Saint Mary's will then meet for a third time next Tuesday in the title game of the WCC Tournament at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. For what it's worth, Gonzaga has won the WCC Tournament in eight of the past nine seasons. Nobody other than Gonzaga or Saint Mary's has won it since San Diego upset the Zags in the title game of the 2008 WCC Tournament.
