Duke rolled to an easy victory Saturday over Appalachian State 93-58 but came away with another injury, this one to leading scorer Grayson Allen.

Less than a week ago,Coach Mike Krzyzewski said that Allen was playing at "about 50 percent," and that number suffered another hit on Saturday. He scored 21 points against Appalachian State, all in the first half, before suffering a toe injury and exiting in the second half. He did not return to the game.

"It's his toe," Krzyzewski told the Duke Chronicle. "He just landed funny, and when that happens, it hurts. It really hurts. He looked fresher in that first half than he has the entire season."

Allen has been hobbled since the Kansas game on Nov. 15, but a few days off showed he had an extra pip in his step Saturday. But landing funny on his toe may have aggravated a lingering issue, especially after dealing with leg and toe injuries earlier this year.

The injury is particularly significant because of the Blue Devils' next opponent, Michigan State, on Tuesday. Coach K added that star freshmen Harry Giles, Jayson Tatum and Marques Bolden will not play. None have played this season, but they all participated in warm-ups for the Blue Devils this week, which could signal a return in the near future.

In the meantime, though, Duke continues to fight the injury bug and have yet to get to full strength in the early season. While it could be seen as a reason for optimism, given their 6-1 record in the early going, it's easy to understand the frustration behind Coach K.

"We had this unbelievably deep team, supposedly, and we really the last month have been back to what we've done the last two years," Krzyzewski said. "There's no contact in practice, we can hardly practice, you're in therapy, and that's frustrating, but you do what you need to do."
