The Wichita State Shockers have enjoyed the comforts of home their last four games, but now they must head out on the road. Wichita State and the East Carolina Pirates will face off in an American Athletic battle at 7 p.m. ET Wednesday at Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum. The Shockers might have East Carolina circled on their calendar as an easy win since they are a perfect 5-0 since January of 2018.
Wichita State simply couldn't be stopped last week, as they easily beat the Prairie View A&M Panthers at home 102-66. Wichita State got double-digit scores from six players: guard Tyson Etienne (20), forward Morris Udeze (16), forward Clarence Jackson (15), guard Dexter Dennis (14), forward Kenny Pohto (12), and guard Chaunce Jenkins (11). Etienne hadn't helped his team much against the North Texas Mean Green two weeks ago, so this was a nice turnaround for him.
Meanwhile, East Carolina escaped with a win last Tuesday against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles by the margin of a single free throw, 68-67. The Pirates' guard Tristen Newton did his thing and had 22 points and six assists.
The Shockers are the favorite in this one, with an expected 5-point margin of victory. But bettors beware: they are only 3-6 against the spread when favored.
Their wins lifted both teams to an identical 9-3. Tyson Etienne will be someone to keep an eye on after he had 20 points and five assists last Wednesday. Let's see if he can build on that strong performance or if East Carolina's defense can bottle him up.
