Florida A&M has hired Byron Samuels as its new coach, making the official announcement on Thursday night.

Samuels has been the head coach of Hampton and Radford, while also serving as an assistant at Tennessee for four seasons. Last season, Samuels was the basketball operations coordinator at Georgia.

“We have a lot of work to do recruiting but I’m encouraged that there are still some good players; good students out there,” Samuel told the Tallahassee Democrat. “The ones I’ve been speaking with the last few days are excited about FAMU (and) the opportunity.

“We just can’t take bodies. We are not going to do that. We are going to make sure we do our homework.”

Samuels replaces Clemon Johnson, who was fired in April.
