Harvard star Kyle Casey, accused in academic scandal, might miss season

The upcoming season was supposed to be one of the best years in Harvard’s basketball history, and Kyle Casey was expected to finish his career adding to his impressive Ivy League resume.

But a cheating scandal clouds the upcoming season for both the school and Casey. Luke Winn of SI.com reports that Casey plans to withdraw from school and miss the entire season after being implicated in the scandal.

In late August, it was reported that Harvard College’s disciplinary board was investigating almost half of the students who took a government class last spring for cheating. The class had 279 students, including a number of athletes. A letter to students indicates the allegations included “inappropriate collaboration to outright plagiarism, on a take-home final exam.”

According to Winn, an academic dishonesty charge could carry a one-year suspension -- which Casey does not want to fight, which would risk his final season of eligibility. The withdrawal deadline at Harvard is Tuesday, meaning Casey potentially could return to the school next year if he withdraws for the next two academic semesters.

Sources tell CBSSports.com that senior starting guard and co-captain Brandyn Curry also was in the same government class, but it is unclear if he will withdraw for the academic year.

As of now, the plan is for Casey to return next fall, according to sources, as he still has one year of basketball eligibility remaining.

Casey, a 6-foot-7 forward, led Harvard in scoring last season, averaging 11.4 points and 5.5 rebounds as the Crimson went to its first NCAA Tournament in 66 years. The first-team All-Ivy performer was being counted upon to lead the way again this season after Tommy Amaker’s troops lost two starters.

The school newspaper reported the football team is preparing to “miss a few players.”
