Kansas star Joel Embiid has decided to forgo his final three seasons of Division I eligibility and enter the 2014 NBA Draft, Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski reported Thursday.
A formal announcement is expected soon.
Embiid is projected as the second overall pick in at least one mock draft and could theoretically go No. 1 after averaging 11.2 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.6 blocks in 23.1 minutes before suffering a back injury that robbed the freshman of the final six games of his season. The 7-foot center's main competition for the top spot is teammate Andrew Wiggins, a 6-foot-8 wing who averaged 17.1 points and 5.9 rebounds in 32.8 minutes.
The Jayhawks, even with these losses, will likely be picked to win their 11th straight Big 12 title. Perry Ellis, Wayne Selden, Naadir Tharpe, Frank Mason, Jamari Taylor and Conner Frankamp are among the expected returnees. They'll be joined by a recruiting class highlighted by five-star prospects Kelly Oubre and Cliff Alexander, the latter of whom is a 6-9 center who was recently named the Naismith High School National Player of the year.
