Kentucky, Duke and more after top-five 2015 big Stephen Zimmerman

Because Stephen Zimmerman has been a name on the national scene for a few years now, it’s easy to forget that the 7-footer has only been playing basketball since he was 11.

It’s amazing to see his rapid rate of improvement over the course of the past five years – and he’s only getting better.

In fact, Zimmerman’s performances at the NBPA Top 100 and Pangos All-American camps could certainly push him into the mix for the No. 1 spot in the class of 2015. The Bishop Gorman (Nev.) product knows how to score in a variety of ways, utilizing back-to-the-basket moves and also knocking down shots from the perimeter. Zimmerman has a high basketball IQ, knowing when to pass out of double-teams or when to go to the rim.

While not comparing himself to anyone in the NBA, Zimmerman says he’s tried to take a few facets of players’ games.

“I would say I try to take a little bit from a couple players,” he said. “Like I try to copy Tim Duncan’s footwork, Blake Griffin’s explosiveness, and Dirk’s shooting ability, little stuff like that.”

There are plenty of schools showing interest in the big man, including UNLV, UCLA, Kansas, Connecticut, Arizona, Oregon, Oregon State, Memphis, UTEP , Auburn, <span data-shortcode= State" data-canon="Florida Gators" data-type="SPORTS_OBJECT_TEAM" id="shortcode0">, Tennessee and Notre Dame.

Zimmerman has taken trips to UNLV, UCLA and Arizona in the past.

“They all have great atmosphere, and they all have great campuses,” he said. “All of them know how to use their best players and their big men, so that’s a big thing.”

Another school that has come into the picture recently is Duke, with the Blue Devils making pitches to both Zimmerman and his mother.

“I’m excited with all the schools that have talked to me, but Duke is an amazing school and has a great history,” he said, “so it’s a great honor to be talked to by them.”

Zimmerman is ranked No. 3 in the 247 Sports Composite.
