Memphis freshman Dominic Woodson suspended for ... cussing
Memphis coach Josh Pastner said freshman center Dominic Woodson has been suspended indefinitely from the program because of what amounts to inappropriate language used on the bench during the 20th-ranked Tigers' 76-70 win over UCF late Wednesday.
Pastner removed Woodson from the bench in the second half.
"I did not like some of his language [that] he used," Pastner explained to a group of reporters in the postgame press conference. "So I said, 'See ya.'"
Woodson was ejected from Saturday's win over Gonzaga because of a Flagrant 2 foul committed against Przemek Karnowski, point being that Wednesday's burst of inappropriate language was more of a final straw than the first. Still, Pastner cited Woodson's language in the win over UCF as the reason for the suspension, then explained that he simply will not tolerate some of the words he heard coming from Woodson's mouth.
Pastner, it should be noted, does not curse.
"Dom is a good kid; he has a good heart," Pastner told CBSSports.com by phone early Thursday. "But there are some things that I just won't tolerate. I don't talk that way, and I don't want players in my program talking that way, and that's the bottom line.
"My job is to coach Dom, and to love him," Pastner added. "But with love comes discipline, and if a few wind sprints in practice didn't teach a listen, then maybe this suspension will."
Woodson is averaging 7.5 minutes per game for Memphis, which is 19-5 overall, 8-3 in the American Athletic Conference and 20th in the AP poll. The Tigers are scheduled to play at No. 24 Connecticut on Saturday afternoon. Pastner said Woodson will not make the trip.
