Michigan rolls in much-anticipated showdown against VCU
The much-hyped showdown between VCU and Michigan turned out to be a Wolverines romp.
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- This was hyped as maybe the matchup of the Round of 32. VCU's Havoc defense against the team that takes care of the ball and possesses the best point guard in the nation.
Michigan advanced to the Sweet 16 without any difficulty as the Wolverines committed just a dozen turnovers and got career-highs of 21 points and 14 boards from freshman big man Mitch McGary.
It wasn't just McGary, though. John Beilein's team, which handled the pressure exceptionally well, had contributions all the way down the line.
Sophomore floor leader Trey Burke had 18 points and seven assists (he also committed seven of the team's turnovers), Glenn Robinson III finished with 14 points and nine boards and Tim Hardaway Jr. added 14 points.
Michigan, the youngest and most inexperienced of the true Final Four and national title contenders, became the first team to advance to the Sweet 16 and will face the winner of the Kansas-North Carolina game.
