Michigan's loss to Penn State in the mix for shocker of season

An image of what this season is all about. Penn State over Michigan was utterly unpredictable -- yet fitting. (USATSI)

Bill Self and Kansas has company for the most embarrasing loss of the season. John Beilein and Michigan, battling for a Big Ten regular-season title and a No. 1 overall seed, were knocked off at Penn State

Yes, Penn State.

The Nittany Lions entered the game 0-for-14 in league play. Pat Chambers is still rebuilding and lost his best player, Tim Frazier, who went down with a season-ending Achilles tendon injury in mid-November.

Michigan had been struggling of late -- ever since losing to Wisconsin in overtime on a game the Wolverines should have won in regulation. There was the spanking in East Lansing against rival Michigan State and a near-loss at home to Penn State.

Glenn Robinson III has apparently hit a freshman wall, and has scored just 14 points in the three recent losses. Fellow frosh Nik Stauskas has been erratic, and the Wolverines were without underrated veteran big man Jordan Morgan until recently.

Trey Burke had an uncharacteristic six turnovers in the setback on Wednesday night, but it was Michigan's defense that was the issue against Penn State. The Nittany Lions shot 47 percent from the field, made 10-of-20 shots from deep and also got to the line 27 times.

The Wolverines, after Indiana's setback at Minnesota 24 hours prior, had an opportunity to get within a game of Big Ten leader Indiana. Michigan had three games left after the road contest at Penn State: at home against Michigan State, Purdue in West Lafayette and the regular-season finale against Indiana.

Now the Wolverines need to run the table -- and get some help -- to win the Big Ten and also lay claim to a No. 1 seed. It appears unlikely, but with the way the college basketball campaign has unfolded, I'm not ruling out anything.

Especially not after watching Penn State storm the court after beating Michigan.
