Minnesota suspends big man Mo Walker six games
Minnesota will open the season shorthanded in the frontcourt, as the Gophers announced Friday that center Mo Walker was suspended six games.
Entering Richard Pitino’s first year at Minnesota, the perimeter was in fairly good hands with returnees Andre and Austin Hollins and a few good newcomers. The frontcourt was going to be the big question mark – and Friday’s news didn’t make things any better.
Junior big man Maurice Walker was suspended for six games for a violation of university policy, Pitino announced.
The school wouldn’t divulge further details.
Walker, a 6-foot-10 center, lost 60 pounds in the offseason and was expected to be a factor this season. He averaged 14 points and nine rebounds in the Golden Gophers’ two exhibition games.
Without Walker, look for Pitino go with a smaller lineup. Junior Elliott Eliason started 13 games last season at center, and he will likely pick up more minutes as well.
Minnesota opened its season on Friday night against Lehigh.
