No. 23 Purdue rolls over Vermont, but where is A.J. Hammons?
No. 23 Purdue is out to a nice start at 2-0 following Sunday's 107-79 win over a pretty decent Vermont team. However, there's one question that persists with this group right now that still hasn't been answered. Where is All-Big Ten center A.J. Hammons?
No. 23 Purdue is out to a nice start at 2-0 following today's 107-79 win over a pretty decent Vermont team.
Caleb Swanigan has back-to-back double-doubles to start his collegiate careeer, and it's been relatively smooth sailing at the point guard position despite questions there in the preseason. Also, the team is now a pretty ridiculous 30-for-67 from 3-point range despite the interior-heavy nature of their attack.
However, there's one question that persists with this group that still hasn't been answered.
Where is All-Big Ten center A.J. Hammons?
Hammons was the driving force behind Purdue's run to the NCAA Tournament last season, averaging 11.9 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game. But to this point, the big man hasn't played in either of the Boilermakers' regular-season games, and he also missed the team's lone exhibition contest.
Following the victory today, coach Matt Painter said he hoped to have Hammons on the floor against Vermont, but the senior has some issues to take care of off the floor without going into specfics.
"He's got to take care of some business internally in our program, especially as a senior," Painter said.
"We're trying to help him, but he has to help himself."
This is not the first time Hammons has missed a few games at the start of a season. Back in 2013, he was suspended for the first three games of the season due to a violation of team rules.
Painter went on to say that he "hopes" to have Hammons against Incarnate Word this coming Wednesday. Given the indefinite nature of the situation and the caliber of player Hammons is, this is certainly something to monitor going forward with the Boilermakers.
