Oral Roberts forced to forfeit two Southland Conference games
An odd scheduling snafu has the Southland taking two games away from Oral Roberts.
Oral Roberts has announced something rare: The school's men's basketball team will be forced to forfeit two upcoming intra-league games due to a stipulation with NCAA rules.
Schools are not allowed to play more than four games per season against teams from outside Division I without facing retributive justice in some form.
Bylaw 18.104.22.168 in the NCAA rulebook declares that "an institution may schedule and play not more than four basketball games, including any contest (e.g., scrimmage, exhibition), in an academic year against institutions that are not members of Division I (Revised: 3/1/12)."
In 2013-14, 7-8 ORU has played regular-season games against Cameron College and Dallas Baptist, in addition to exhibitions vs. Northwood and Rogers State. Where ORU gets dinged is in the details. Due to transitional D-I schools Abilene Christian and Incarnate Word, they don't fully count as a D-I opponent, although they are first-year members of the Southland.
"The Southland's Executive Committee has reviewed the issue, and agrees with ORU's decision to forfeit the pair of upcoming league games, Jan. 16 at Abilene Christian and Jan. 18 at Incarnate Word," according to a release from the Southland Conference.
The league said those two forfeits will be counted as regular losses when it comes time to seed the conference tourney in March. It also said the NCAA will not record the forfeits, rather, will see the canceled games as no-contests.
Oral Roberts will return to its former home, the Summit League, in 2014.
