A pair of tweets from rising high school seniors Isaiah Whitehead and Ja’Quan Newton on Friday morning got the rumor mill buzzing.

Whitehead confirmed the potential package deal in a text message to CBSSports.com.

“We are thinking about it,” he told CBSSports.com. “We are close friends and we complement each other’s game a lot.”

While the two biggest schools on each player’s list are Minnesota and Syracuse, Whitehead said there are other possibilities in the works, too.

“It can be anywhere, you never know,” he said. “Both of our lists are wide open.”

Minnesota has made a stronger push since Richard Pitino took over the Golden Gophers, with assistant coaches Kimani Young and Dan McHale working the Northeast effectively. Whitehead and Newton have become more interested in Minnesota in recent weeks, and the two plan on visiting the campus together in the fall. Sources said the visit could come in September.

As for Syracuse, the Orange have been pursuing Whitehead longer than pretty much everyone. They have been considered one of the favorites for his services for a couple of years, and they haven’t cooled on him recently. Are the Orange as strongly after Newton? Sources told CBSSports.com that the staff does indeed like Newton, although Kaleb Joseph is another primary target in the class of 2014.

Louisville was making a move for Whitehead earlier this month, but a commitment this week from five-star combo guard JaQuan Lyle made the Cardinals less likely of a destination.

Whitehead, a 6-foot-4 shooting guard from Lincoln (N.Y.), is one of the top five backcourt scorers in the country. He is ranked No. 20 in the 247 Sports Composite, good enough for a five-star rating.

Meanwhile, Newton is a strong and talented 6-2 point guard from Neumann-Goretti (Pa.). He’s capable of getting to the rim consistently against nearly any defender and is listed at No. 49 in the 247 Sports Composite.

While nothing looks imminent, a package deal between two of the better Northeast guards in the class of 2014 appears to be a strong possibility.
