PHOTO: Indiana State unveils Larry Bird statue
Larry Legend had his likeness put to stone at his alma mater recently. Here's how it came out.
If they got the short shorts right, then it's a statue that's complete.
Indiana State recently revealed its homage to the greatest player in school history. The 15-foot-tall Larry Bird sculpture weights about 1,900 pounds and is now standing outside ISU's Hulman Center. Gotta say, that's a job well done. The shooting form is accurately recreated, as is the glorious head of hair Bird once had. And you can tell that statue is eminating Bird's endearing arrogance from his playing days.
The Indianapolis Star was on hand for the unveiling.
[Sculptor Bill] Wolfe said that he hopes everyone likes his depiction of Bird and the statue’s position.
“Whatever we do here, it will be final. It is a little unnerving part of the process here,” he said. “It’s exciting and unnerving.”
Bird led Indiana State to a national championship game in 1979, although the Sycamores lost the NCAA title to Magic Johnson’s Michigan State team. ... Crane operator Brent Clark said he was thrilled to be able to put Bird’s statue into place, recalled that he had season tickets during Bird’s final year at ISU.
“This is enjoyable for me to do. In Larry’s senior year at ISU, I had a season ticket and went to every one of the ball games here at Hulman Center,” he said.
Michigan State also has one for Magic Johnson, by the way. ISU was able to make this happen in part because of the Larry Legend Foundation on campus, which started in 2005. Students rallied for it to happen. And now there is a Larry Legend Scholarship, a fund that will help athletes from the state of Indiana. Bird is currently the president of the Indiana Pacers.
Indiana State opens its season Saturday against Ball State.
