PHOTOS: Russ Smith saves the day at local basketball homecoming
This is a nice little story about how Russ Smith became a girl's date when she found herself suddenly solo.
Louisville's duPont Manual High School had its basketball homecoming event on Friday night.
A girl name Tonysha Curry, who plays on the freshman team, was suddenly without a date for the between-games festivities. Who happened to be in the building? Only one of the most well-known players in the state and one of the best college basketball guards in the country.
Russ Smith, this is pretty cool. It was by coincidence, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal, that Smith was at the game. (Details below.) When Curry realized she was without an escort, she actually approached Smith about stepping in after teammates encouraged her to go up to him. (Ah, high school nerves; I do not miss you.)
That's the kind of guts Smith has to appreciate. And he did.
“I was like, ‘I don’t know if I can do it. I’m scared,’” Curry said with a laugh. “I just walked over there and said, ‘Excuse me, can you please escort me for homecoming court.’ He was like, ‘Can I do it? Really? Really?’”
Smith said he was glad to help out Curry.
“It actually made my day more than hers,” Smith said. “It was really nice of her to ask me, so I got up and did it for her. … That never happens. It’s one-in-a-million. That made my day.”
Smith said he attended the game because he’s good friends with Dean Baumert, an assistant coach with the Eastern boys’ squad who is a former student manager at U of L.
Curry scored four points in her team's 58-54 win against Eastern High School.
Smith took time to pose for photos with others at the games as well.
