After bookending Thanksgiving weekend in New York with a 1-1 performance at Madison Square Garden in the NIT, Pitt enters this week having to deal with a distraction stemming from an incident on Sunday.
Junior guard and Central Michigan transfer Trey Zeigler has been charged with driving under the influence. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports Zeigler will "be charged by mail summons with two misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence. Details of the arrest were not immediately available."
Monday afternoon, Pitt responded to the charges.
"The incident involving Trey Zeigler is not only surprising, but incredibly disappointing," Pitt head coach Jamie Dixon said in a statement released by the university. "Although I believe it was out of character for Trey, he has been immediately suspended until further notice. Trey has expressed his deep regret to me and understands and respects the importance of accountability for one’s actions."
Zeigler, 21, was given a transfer waiver by the NCAA this past offseason, deemed eligible to play immediately instead of having to sit the standard one year because his father, Ernie Zeigler, was fired as head coach at Central Michigan.
Zeigler's preliminary hearing for the DUI is scheduled for Feb. 5.
"I want to apologize to my family, the University of Pittsburgh, my teammates and coaches and the entire Pittsburgh community," Zeigler said in a statement released by the university. "This is not indicative of the kind of person I am, nor the kind of person I want to be."
Zeigler is averaging 6.2 points and 1.2 rebounds per game through the 5-1 Panthers' start to their season.
