Report: P.J. Hairston told cops convicted felon loaned him car

North Carolina standout P.J. Hairston admitted to police that he's a recreational marijuana user and that Haydn "Fats" Thomas loaned him the rental car that he was driving on the night of his arrest last month, according to a report in the Raleigh News & Observer.

Hairston's statement to police contradicts the story from Thomas, a convicted felon who has told reporters that he did not give the 2013 GMC Yukon to Hairston but to another man, Miykael Faulcon, who was also in the SUV when it was stopped on June 5. Faulcon's mother has told USA Today that her son has "no relationship" with Thomas, which previously cast doubt on Thomas' explanation. Additionally, USA Today reported Hairston was ticketed in another rental car in May that was also connected to Thomas.

North Carolina officials have said little more than that they are reviewing Hairston's situation, and they've offered no timetable for a resolution. But it's becoming undeniable that Hairston has accepted impermissible benefits on some level, and a source told on Friday that the NCAA is expected to get involved.

Hairston averaged 14.6 points per game last season as a sophomore guard to lead the Tar Heels in scoring.
